Hemorrhoids is one of the most common painful, embarassing disease to have. Unfortunately, statistics say that half of the American people will have this condition by the time they reach the age of 50. So let us view one of the major causes of hemorrhoids and an exercise that said could help.

Hemorrhoids is one form of a varicose vein. What does that mean? That means that the veins around the rectum become swollen, and this can cause major discomfort. Some references cites that Kegel exercise can help dealing with hemorrhoids. Other references say that you must be careful doing the exercise when you have hemorrhoids. Confusing right? Time to get down to the bottom of this contradiction.

What is Kegel exercise?

Kegel exercise is a form of exercise named from the originator of it, Dr. Arnold Kegel. This exercise consists of contracting and relaxing the muscles in the pelvic floor area. Now, that muscle area is rarely trained by daily activities, so exercising it must be deliberate. Now doing the exercise puts pressure on the muscle group. Someone already with hemorrhoids must be careful not to contract the muscle to the point of pain. That will cause even more pressure to the anal veins and can make the situation more worse.

Wait! You said Kegel would help?

Yes, kegel helps preventing hemorrhoids from forming. Especially with pregnant women, hemorrhoids is caused because there’s more blood circulating through your veins when you’re pregnant. This can cause your veins, specifically those below your uterus, to be dilated. Now this is where Kegel kicks in! By doing Kegel practice you can benefit from it in two ways. The first is that they will increase blood circulation to your rectum, this prevent hemorrhoids. The second is that they will strengthen the vaginal and perianal muscles, which will facilitate healing after delivery. So the point is, Kegel helps to prevent and strengthen the muscle areas where hemorrhoids could occur. There’s no contradiction in the references, sometimes they just don’t put when is the best time to use it.

How do you do it? This is the simplest way I found.

1. Contract the muscles in your vaginal and rectal area.

2. Keep it in this position for 10 seconds, release, and then rinse. Do several sets throughout the day.

The great thing about Kegel is, you can do it virtually anywhere. Sitting, driving, you name it, people won’t notice you’re exercising the muscle (keep a poker face though, wouldn’t want people to think you’re constipated all the time).

Unfortunately, Kegel Exercise can only do so much. For more information about what do hemorrhoids look like and hemorrhoid symptoms just click on the link.
